Interview with a Coach

What is Coaching

Inquirer:

So Graham, what do you do?

Coach:

I am in the business of accelerating success!

Inquirer:

What does that mean?

Coach:

I empower people - individuals and businesses – to achieve their goals far quicker than they would on their own. I partner their success.

Inquirer:

How does that work?

Coach:

I’m a Coach!

Inquirer:

Ooohhh, what sport?

Coach:

No. I specialize in life – all areas of life. I make an empowering difference in people’s lives. I co-create a Higher Quality of Life for my clients and therefore the people around them.

Inquirer:

How?

Coach:

OK let’s use yourself as an example.

Inquirer:

Me? OK!

Coach:

Great! If there were anything you would change about your life right now, what would it be?

Inquirer:

Wow! Lot’s of things – I’d lose about 10kg’s for a start.

Coach:

Great! But let’s look at some major changes. If you knew you could not fail, there was absolutely no risk and money was no object, what would you be doing with your life right now?

Inquirer:

That’s easy, I’d resign and open up a Bed n Breakfast in Magoebaskloof.

Coach:

How long have you had this dream?

Inquirer:

Oh ever since I finished my MBA and wondered what it was all for.

Coach:

So what has stopped you?

Inquirer:

Money! Or rather lack of money.

Coach:

Yes money plays a big part – but it’s not everything. Will you work with me on something.

Inquirer:

OK

Coach:

What is your average monthly expenses right now?

Inquirer:

Oh about R 24 000 per month, you know bond, kids education, savings, car, groceries etc.

Coach:

Thank you. How do you feel about meeting these expenses every month?

Inquirer:

OK I guess. Some months are close but we generally manage.

Coach:

Great – how would you feel about adding a zero to your monthly expenses.

Inquirer:

No way! We’d never afford that!

Coach:

Really? When did you start working?

Inquirer:

Oh about twenty years ago.

Coach:

And what were your average monthly expenses then?

Inquirer:

Whew! That’s going back a bit. About … OK I see what’s going on here.

Coach:

You do?

Inquirer:

Yes! My expenses were only about R 2 500 per month back then and now they are almost ten times that.

Coach:

Exactly! What seemed inconceivable then is quite manageable now isn’t it.

Inquirer:

Yes. But R 240 000 per month. Whew!

Coach:

Why are your expenses manageable now?

Inquirer:

That’s easy because my earnings have increased.

Coach:

What would you be earning if you owned and operated a B&B?

Inquirer:

A lot more, probably enough to manage it comfortably, but how will I raise the money to open a B&B?

Coach:

How did you raise the money to buy your first house?

Inquirer:

I got a bond from the bank.

Coach:

Exactly, so is it money that is holding you back or is it something else?

Inquirer:

Oh, OK, I see – deep down it isn’t money.

Coach:

Exactly! Money is just a medium of exchange. Money follows intention. So that’s what I do – help people to get clarity on what they want and what is really stopping them. The next step would be to identify the real blockage and come up with an action plan to overcome it and achieve the Higher Quality of Life they desire, whatever that may be for them. It takes time.

Inquirer:

How long?

Coach:

It depends on the desired outcome. Usually I work with a client for a minimum of 12 sessions, sometimes more, until we co-create the desired outcome.

Inquirer:

Great – tell me more! How can you help me?
